Corps Member’s Murder: Okada rider, herb seller, 1 other, sentenced to death by hanging

In a tragic turn of events, one Jelili Kareem, a herb seller; Oludayo Oludele, a commercial motorcyclist; and Muyiwa Awodeji, an electrician; have received the death penalty by hanging from an Osun State High Court in Ile-Ife on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

This sentencing comes after the trio was found guilty of killing a corps member, Mukaila Adebayo, during a robbery in Osogbo, the state capital.

The incident took place on January 28, 2020, in the Omo West Area of Osogbo. The men were accused of conspiring to rob Adebayo, who was undergoing his mandatory one-year service for graduates, of his belongings before fatally shooting him. The crimes committed were in violation of Sections 316, 319, and 324 of the Criminal Code Law.

During the trial that began on October 8, 2020, the defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder.

Alongside them, Buliaminu Anifowose, a vulcanizer, was also brought to court for allegedly purchasing stolen recharge cards from the deceased.

The prosecutor from the state Ministry of Justice presented compelling evidence including testimony from Adebayo’s daughter who was present at the scene, the pathologist who conducted the autopsy, and the Investigative Police Officer.

Despite the defense’s arguments that the case was not proven, the court found the defendants guilty.

In his verdict, Justice Adedapo Adeniji ruled that Kareem, Oludele, and Awodeji would face death by hanging for their involvement in the heinous crime of murder and armed robbery. Anifowose, however, was acquitted of the charges.
