Harris hits campaign trail ahead of protest-filled democratic convention

US Vice President Kamala Harris is set to hit the campaign trail on Sunday, embarking on a high-stakes bus tour through Pennsylvania just days before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Her campaign, buoyed by a recent surge in polls, comes amid expectations of significant protests against the Biden-Harris administration’s policies on Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Harris, who recently replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, will first head to Pennsylvania’s swing state to rally support from blue-collar voters. Her tour will start in Pittsburgh and extend across western Pennsylvania, a critical region for securing votes in the upcoming election.

The Democratic National Convention, scheduled from August 19-22, is anticipated to be a focal point for mass demonstrations. Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to gather daily, expressing their discontent with the administration’s stance on the Gaza conflict. The city of Chicago is bracing for these demonstrations, with heightened security measures in place to manage the large crowds.

Despite the anticipated disruptions, the convention is expected to offer a significant platform for Harris. The event will feature key appearances, including a joint appearance with former President Bill Clinton, former President Barack Obama, and other prominent Democratic figures. Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will also be a central figure at the convention, joining Harris in campaign efforts across pivotal battleground states.

Harris is slated to deliver a major address on the final day of the convention. Additionally, she will appear alongside President Biden during his speech on Monday, signalling a show of unity within the party. Biden, although not a candidate, is expected to focus on supporting Harris and highlighting the achievements of his administration.
