The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has urged newly inaugurated students of Junior Course 20 at the Nigeria Customs Service to fully embrace the knowledge and skills they will gain during their training, emphasizing their pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and strengthening the national economy.
Speaking through the Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG) of Customs, Sulaiman Bomai, who represented him at the Ahmad Makarfi Theater of the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College (NCCSC) in Gwagwalada, CGC Adeniyi underscored the importance of continuous learning in Customs operations. He urged the students to actively engage in the training, as it is a vital stepping stone in their careers.
“This ceremony represents a long-standing tradition in our institution, emphasizing dedication, discipline, and the pursuit of development, which have been the bedrock of the Nigeria Customs Service,” remarked DCG Bomai. He highlighted the Service’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of its personnel through various initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and growth.
In his address, Bomai encouraged participants to think creatively and contribute fresh ideas to propel the Service’s transformation. He reminded the students that their journey had just begun, stating, “You are the future of the Nigeria Customs Service. The knowledge you acquire here will equip you to lead the way forward. Embrace this opportunity to grow and meet the challenges ahead.”
CGC Adeniyi further encouraged the trainees to view their facilitators as role models, aspiring to excel in their roles. He also called on the trainers to support the students, ensuring their academic and personal welfare needs are addressed. “Knowledge is the key to advancing the Service. Use this opportunity to prepare for the future and make a meaningful impact,” he stated.
DCG Bomai reassured participants that the CGC is committed to supporting any officer keen on advancing their professional development, expressing confidence in the trainees’ potential to become catalysts for positive change within the Service.
Assistant Comptroller-General Kingsley Egwuh, Commandant of NCCSC, emphasized the course’s critical role in developing participants’ leadership, command, and communication skills. These are essential for driving revenue generation, facilitating trade, and enhancing national security. He added that the training would equip the students to take on greater responsibilities in command and staff appointments.
Egwuh also reminded the students of the need to maintain discipline throughout the program, stressing that any breach of rules would attract severe consequences.
The event also marked the final official engagement of DCG Sulaiman Bomai, who retires after 35 years of distinguished service.
