Legacy of Integrity: The Northern Speaker who rejected luxurious gifts
In a captivating story of virtue and humility, Alhaji Umaru Gwandu, the revered Speaker of the Northern Regional House of Assembly, left a lasting legacy with his remarkable act of rejecting a lavish car gift.
This story is deeply rooted in the history of UTC Motors in Kaduna and a gesture of kindness that shaped a significant chapter in Nigerian history.
Years ago, as Sir Ahmadu Bello journeyed to Kano, his car broke down near Funtua. Amidst the inconvenience, a compassionate man named Sinnemann came to the rescue.
Not only did he offer Ahmadu Bello a ride to his destination, but he also arranged for the car to be repaired by UTC Motors.
This act of generosity deeply touched Bello, who later invited Sinnemann to expand his business to Kaduna.
The success of UTC Motors in Kaduna was so significant that it soon rivalled its Lagos counterpart.
In a gesture of gratitude for this extraordinary support, Sinnemann gifted a brand-new car to Alhaji Umaru Gwandu, the then Speaker of the Northern Regional House of Assembly.
However, Gwandu’s response was nothing short of inspiring. He humbly declined the gift, stating, “You can see two cars in my compound, one personal, one official.
I don’t need any other car.” This refusal exemplified the spirit of past leaders who placed public service above personal gain.

Gwandu’s life story is a testament to unwavering dedication and integrity.
Born in 1913 into the Gwandu ruling house, he embarked on a distinguished career, starting as a teacher before becoming the Private Secretary to the Emir of Gwandu. His political ascent culminated in 1959 when he became the first Speaker of the Northern Regional House of Assembly.
Throughout his tenure, Gwandu earned respect from all corners of the political landscape for his commitment and transparency.
Despite the upheaval of January 1966, which ended his tenure, Gwandu’s service continued to shine.
He was honoured with high distinctions, including the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. George (CMG), Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
In his later years, he contributed significantly to relief efforts and rural water projects in the North Western Government.
Alhaji Umaru Gwandu’s life tragically ended in a motor accident on December 1, 1974. His legacy of selflessness and integrity remains an enduring example for future leaders.
