Former NEC Chairman Prof. Humphrey Nwosu passes away at 83
Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away at the age of 83 in a hospital in Virginia, USA.
Nwosu played a pivotal role in overseeing the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which is widely considered Nigeria’s most credible democratic exercise, believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.
The NEC has since been rebranded as the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu was appointed by then-military ruler Ibrahim Babangida.
Under his leadership, the commission implemented the revolutionary Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system, making significant strides in electoral processes.
Despite releasing many election results from different states, Nwosu was ordered by the military government of Ibrahim Babangida to halt further declaration of the results.
The poll was shockingly annulled truncating the democratic process.
In July 2024, the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to honor Nwosu for his role in conducting what is considered the most credible election in Nigeria’s post-independence history.
