Tinubu orders police to restore peace in Rivers State

President Bola Tinubu has directed the police to swiftly restore and maintain peace, law, and order in Rivers State, which has experienced fatal violence following local government elections over the weekend.

The President also called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, along with political leaders and their supporters, to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.

In light of recent tensions after last Saturday’s local government council elections, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.

In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive behavior.

While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of securing public institutions.

He stated that government facilities built with public funds must be protected from vandalism and stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.

According to President Tinubu, the judiciary is equipped to resolve all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.
