Kemi Badenoch’s election as the new Tory leader has sparked intense debate among Nigerians, with many criticizing her perceived anti-Nigeria statements. Critics argue that she sacrifices her heritage for political gain. However, the question remains: would some Nigerians rather prefer her not to be in this position?
In my view, we should not dismiss her regardless of our feelings. Nigeria stands to gain or lose by its affiliations, so it is essential to support her success. If approached thoughtfully, she could potentially be an asset, opening opportunities for a stronger relationship between Nigeria and her party and Nation if she ultimately becomes Prime Minister.
While her remarks on Nigeria and Africa, especially regarding reparations, may seem harsh, they deserve rational contextualised examination rather than emotional backlash. It must be appreciated that Nations interact based on national interests, not on sentiments. If Badenoch aims to lead Great Britain, she must be perceived as defending British interests.

Interestingly, Nigerians have historically voiced harsher criticisms of our country than Badenoch has. Some of us indulge in a national pastime of denigrating Nigeria both at home and abroad. Even Nigerian leaders have made disparaging comments about the Nation on international stages.
Kemi Badenoch has navigated the complexities of her party’s nationalist ethos with skill. Her ascent to leadership reflects her commitment, hard work, and ability to engage with her party’s foundational values.
