Guinea’s junta chief promotes self to army general
Mamadi Doumbouya, the leader of Guinea’s military junta, has promoted himself to the rank of army general as the country marks the establishment of its new armed forces. Doumbouya, who seized power in a coup in September 2021, previously overthrew President Alpha Conde.
In a decree issued on Friday, Doumbouya, 43, also received the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Colatier, Guinea’s highest honour, for his efforts in fostering social cohesion among the populace.

Doumbouya’s ascension comes amidst a backdrop of political instability in West Africa, where several military leaders, including those in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, have similarly seized power since 2020. His regime has faced accusations of suppressing dissent, with numerous opposition leaders arrested or forced into exile.
Despite possessing significant natural resources, Guinea continues to struggle with poverty and has been under authoritarian rule for decades. As Doumbouya’s supporters advocate for his presidential candidacy when the junta eventually relinquishes power, the future of Guinea remains uncertain.
