Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as part of Tehran’s strategy to pressure its adversaries.
Khamenei made the announcement on Thursday in a recorded address — his first public speech since succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s supreme leader on Sunday.
Earlier, on March 2, a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had declared the strategic waterway “closed,” warning that any vessel attempting to pass through it would be set “ablaze.”
Following the threat and escalating tensions in the region, major global container shipping lines suspended sailings through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Suez Canal over growing security concerns.
Reports indicate that at least five oil tankers have been damaged in the crisis, with two personnel killed and about 150 ships stranded around the strait, which lies between Iran and Oman.
The disruption has already rattled global energy markets, pushing crude oil prices above $100 per barrel on Monday — the highest level recorded since July 2022.
On Wednesday, Ebrahim Zolfaqari, spokesperson for Tehran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, warned that oil prices could climb as high as $200 per barrel.
He said Iran would not allow “a single litre of oil” to pass through the strait for the benefit of the United States, Israel, and their allies.
Responding to the development, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that “death, fire, and fury will reign upon them (Iran)” if Tehran blocks the vital shipping route.
In his address, Khamenei reaffirmed Iran’s position, insisting the country would maintain pressure on its rivals while seeking cordial relations with neighbouring states.
He also demanded the immediate closure of all U.S. military bases across the region, warning they would continue to be targeted if they remain operational.
The Iranian leader added that the country would persist in its fight to avenge “the blood of our martyrs,” while thanking the military for its sacrifices.
Khamenei further disclosed that plans are underway to provide financial assistance to citizens affected by the ongoing conflict.
