Security agencies arrest four suspected bandits near Akure airport

Four suspected bandits have been arrested around Akure Airport in Ondo State following a joint security operation involving aviation authorities and other security agencies.

The development was confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in a statement on Sunday.

According to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the suspects were apprehended after authorities received a distress alert about suspicious individuals sighted behind the airport’s perimeter fence towards the Eleyewo community.

Agbebire explained that security personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force quickly launched a coordinated search operation in the area.

During the operation, some of the suspects reportedly attempted to escape, but four individuals were eventually captured and handed over to the police Area Command for further investigation.

The authority commended the swift collaboration among aviation security officers, the military, the police, and local security groups, including the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, whose combined efforts led to the arrests.

FAAN also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to strengthen security around airports across the country.

According to the agency, work has begun in phases to install modern perimeter fencing and other security infrastructure aimed at preventing unlawful access and improving safety at airport facilities nationwide.

The authority reassured travellers and host communities of its continued commitment to maintaining the security of airports across Nigeria.
