Suspected IED blasts shake Maiduguri, trigger panic among residents
Residents of Maiduguri were thrown into panic on Monday evening following multiple loud explosions that rocked parts of the city.
The blasts, believed to have been caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), are suspected to have been planted by fighters linked to Boko Haram.
Areas reportedly affected by the explosions include the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market Roundabout and the Elkanemi area of the Borno State capital.
Witnesses said the first explosion occurred at about 7 p.m., shortly after Muslims broke their fast.
As of the time of filing this report, it was not clear whether the incident resulted in casualties.
The explosions came just hours after suspected terrorists attacked a military position in Ajilari, on the outskirts of Maiduguri. During the attack, the assailants reportedly set parts of the facility ablaze and made away with a military patrol vehicle.
Security sources, however, said troops responded swiftly, repelling the attack and killing several of the attackers, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
