Yobe gov’t launches state-of-the-art ICT complex for effective health data management

In a major push towards digital governance, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has commissioned a new Information and Communication Technology complex dedicated to revolutionising the operations of the state’s contributory healthcare scheme.
The facility, inaugurated on Tuesday for the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA), is designed to serve as the technological nerve centre for over 300,000 enrollees.
It is equipped with a biometric capture room, ID card printing unit, a reception call and referral centre, an ICT conference hall, and administrative offices.
Represented by the Commissioner of Health, Dr Mohammed Lawan Gana, Governor Buni stated that the centre marks a definitive shift away from the cumbersome manual processes that previously hindered the agency’s efficiency.
“The reliance on manual systems was a major bottleneck, often leading to frustrating delays and public complaints,” Dr Gana said.
“By embracing digitalisation, we have significantly reduced those grievances. Enrollees can now access services almost instantly.”
Dr Gana stressed that the administration’s commitment to sustainability was integral to the project. He noted that from the initial design phase, a framework for maintenance was embedded to ensure the facility’s long-term functionality.
Delving into the technical impact, the Executive Secretary of YSCHMA, Dr Babagana Tijjani, explained that the new ICT hub will be pivotal in safeguarding the integrity of the scheme, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children under five, and indigent citizens supported by the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.
Dr Tijjani outlined the core technological advantages, stating that the system will facilitate real-time verification of enrollees through their National Identification Numbers (NIN), effectively eliminating issues of duplicate registrations and fraudulent access.
Furthermore, the digital upgrade is set to overhaul financial interactions with healthcare providers by streamlining claims processing, ensuring reimbursements are both faster and more precise.
He added that the technology will also reinforce the agency’s monitoring and evaluation capabilities, enabling officials to accurately track performance metrics across all 162 political wards in the state.
The new complex is expected to serve as the digital backbone for YSCHMA, accelerating the state’s strategic move toward achieving universal health coverage through the power of modern technology.
