Tension in Kano as Assembly members move to impeach Speaker, Deputy

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Serious tension is brewing in the Kano State House of Assembly over moves by its members to remove the speaker, Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari, and his Deputy, Zubairu Hamza.

Neptune Prime’s correspondent gathered from the House on Monday that the plot is connected to their support for former Speaker of the House, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum. This is against the backdrop that the governor and the first lady have another candidate that they are supporting.

The State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo was seen mobilizing members of the house to proceed with the impeachment, because he seems to be the choice of the Governor and his wife for Kano Governorship in 2023.

The majority leader of the House, Alhaji Labaran Abdul Madari of Warawa Constituency, Chief Whip, Former Majority Leader and Former Speaker Abdulaziz Gafasa, are also heavily in the impeachment process to ensure that the exercise succeeds according to directive said to have been given to them by Sule Garo.

Several members of the House told our correspondent in confidence that the impeachment exercise came up after the APC Kano South rally which recently took place in Rano. Both Chidari and his deputy are supporters of Alhaji Alhassan Rurum, while Sule Garo is one of the closest candidates to the governor and his wife. Recently the First lady endorsed him openly for the 2023 Governorship.

But statistics among candidates in the state indicates that Senator Jibril Barau, who belongs to Shekarau’s camp is favoured by a majority of voters in the state as his zone is yet to produce a governor in the history of the state.
