Liverpool Football Club on Tuesday night secured a vital away win in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match with Portuguese side Benfica.

The Reds opened the score line in the 17th minute courtesy of Ibrahim Konate who headed the ball into the back of the net from a corner before Senegalese Sadio Mane added another goal in the 34th minute.

The dampened mood at Estadio da Luz came alive in the second 45 when Konate’s mistake gave way for the home striker Darwin Nunez to pull one back for his club while Luiz Diaz solidified the victory for the Reds.

The 1-3 victory for Liverpool gives them a comfortable advantage as they welcome Benfica in the second leg next Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Manchester City were low with fireworks in front of their home crowd but managed to put in just a goal in the 70th minute courtesy Kevin de Bruyne against visitors Atletico Madrid.

City have a huge task ahead next Wednesday as they travel to Madrid for the second leg.
