Foundation graduates 1st set of corps members as agroprenuers

Leventis Foundation Nigeria (LFN) Agriculture Training School, Abuja on Wednesday graduated the pioneer set of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, having successfully undergone the foundation’s s one-year training programme at the school.

In his remark during the graduation ceremony held at the foundation headquarters in Abuja, the Executive Director, LFN, Dr Hope Usieta, said the achievement was a fruit of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) partnership between the foundation and NYSC.

According to him, forty Corps members in total have undergone agribusiness training and internship across LFN’s training schools in the different agro-ecological zones in Nigeria with the aim to empower corps members with skills for self-employment.

Congratulating the 14 pioneer corps beneficiaries that were graduated by the Abuja centre, the foundation boss said, “Like with our regular trainees, we encourage you to remain in touch with LFN as you all are now part of the family. We want to hear of your stories as you venture into the world of agribusiness. In any case, I am certain we will be engaging with you as it relates to your business plans and startup support.”

Explaining the essence of the partnership, he said, “At LFN, our goal remains to promote sustainability in agriculture and environment protection through the training we offer to youths and farmers in sustainable agribusiness. What better way to achieve this goal than to partner with the apex body in Nigeria that is tasked with youth mobilisation for nation building. Therefore, I seize this opportunity to commend this partnership with NYSC through its SAED department because it has availed us the opportunity to reach out to more youths.

Presenting the graduands, the Principal, LFN Agricultural Training School, Yaba, Abuja, Mrs Agnes Yusuf, said, “With the cooperation of both staff and graduating corps members, we have been able to successfully carry out the task of training these young men and women in modern, sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture which has turned them into well groomed and focused modern farmers.

“They have successfully completed the one year agricultural training which is 80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theory for which they have been assessed in academics, conducts, and practice and found worthy of being graduates of the noble programme.”

The high point of the event was the presentation of certificates to the outgoing corps beneficiaries, followed by awards to 4 outstanding trainees. Of the 14 graduands, 8 were males and 6, females.

LFN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYSC on 1st May, 2021 to absorb and train corps members into its training programme at its six schools across the country.
