Commonwealth Games: Nigeria records first gold medal in weightlifting

Nigeria’s weightlifter, Adijat Olarinoye, Saturday won first gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after defeating other contenders in the women’s 55kg category.

Olarinoye lifted 92kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk, making 203kg in total to set a new Games record in the category.

India’s Bindyarani Sorokhaibam placed second while Fraer Morrow of England finished third.

Recall that Olarinoye won three gold medals at the 2019 All Africa Games and also won Nigeria’s second gold medal at the 2021 International Weightlifting Federation World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
