Emir urges communities to legally arm for Self-defense against banditry
The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, has urged residents of communities within his emirate to legally acquire arms and strengthen local security measures to protect themselves against bandits and other criminal elements.
The monarch made the call during a meeting with district heads, village heads and other community leaders, where he expressed concern over the growing security challenges facing rural communities in parts of Kebbi State.

According to the Emir, communities should not remain defenceless in the face of persistent attacks and should take lawful steps to safeguard their lives, families and property while working with security agencies.
He stressed the need for increased vigilance and stronger collaboration between residents and security operatives to curb criminal activities and improve safety across affected areas.
The Emir’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns over banditry, kidnapping and other security threats in several parts of northern Nigeria. The situation has continued to place pressure on local communities, many of which have called for enhanced security measures and a more robust response from authorities.

His comments are expected to fuel renewed debate on community self-defence and the role of citizens in supporting security efforts. While some stakeholders have argued that communities should be empowered to defend themselves within the limits of the law, others have warned that the proliferation of arms could pose additional security challenges.
Nigeria’s firearms laws regulate the possession and use of weapons, requiring individuals to obtain appropriate licences and approvals from relevant authorities before acquiring firearms.
Security experts maintain that addressing insecurity will require a combination of stronger law enforcement, intelligence gathering, community engagement and sustained government intervention to tackle the root causes of violent crime.
