FIFA World Cup: S’ Korea’s victory over Portugal denies Uruguay a chance at knockout stages

South Korea’s ninety-first (91st) minute goal against slack Portuguese side which led to a 2-1 victory denied Uruguay their dream chance of advancing to the knockout stages.

Uruguay who needed a win against Ghana as they also depended on Portugal to beat South Korea only to be disappointed as the European country failed to live up to expectations in the final Group H played simultaneously.

Portugal got the early lead five minutes to the start of the game courtesy Horta carelessly allowed the Koreans to equalise 22 minutes later.

The Asian country had most of the possessions in the second half and fought for a breakthrough which came at added time courtesy Hwang Hee-chan to make it 2-1.

Meanwhile, Ghana let their fans at the Al Janoub Stadium allowing Uruguay to score twice.

Group H standing

A win for the African nation would have it the third team from the continent to advance to the knockout stages but luck ran out of them.

Elsewhere, Cameroon despite their narrow 1-0 victory over Brazil will be heading home.

Scorer of the goal Vincent Aboubakar was handed a red card for taking his shirt off while celebrating his goal.

Switzerland finished second Group G after beating Serbia 3-2.
