The Young Communicators Initiative inaugurates first free teachers training project
A free training program for teachers in the nation was launched yesterday in Abuja by the foremost non-governmental organization (NGO), The Young Communicators Initiative (TYCI).
In an interview with newsmen after the training, founder of the organisation and lead coordinator, Train and Empower Teachers (TET) project, Chinenye Priscilla Anaemena-Alu, said improving the quality of education in the country is largely dependent on building the capacity of teachers who will in turn impart knowledge and problems solving skills to students for them to stand out in the global space.
“This is our first inaugural project and we recorded over 200 participants both physically and virtual. They were trained on effective elocution mastery in school, introduction to digital pedagogy, role of teachers in child rights and protection, effective school leadership and lots more. After the training, 100 participants were enrolled in the UNESCO Digital Teachers course free of charge.
“We call on organizations, individuals and government to collaborate with us in this continuous journey of improving quality of education for all through capacity development programmes for teachers.
“We can’t talk about developing the nation without giving attention to developing the teachers as teachers are the glue that bonds the society together,”she said
The theme of the training: “Teachers Come Collaborate and Learn,” gave the participating teachers from various schools a forum to discuss the difficulties the education sector is now experiencing and potential solutions. Unhealthy work environments, cultism, school bullying, and problems with social and mental health are just a few of the problems mentioned as challenges.
One of the participants, the proprietress of Royal Gems Mathematical School,Dr. Oluwatoyin Ariyo- Ojeme, said one of the ways to give back to the society is through continuous training of teachers irrespective of whether they will stay or leave the school.
The TET Project, according to Onyinyechi A. O- Etusi, one of the facilitators who spoke on the effective school leadership system, is a great initiative for teachers to truly see themselves as instructional leaders and be heard because they are important to the growth and development of society.
Other participants commended the NGO for coming up with the admirable idea of providing free teacher training to everyone. According to them, the TET project initiative exposed them to a lot of new information and enhanced their ability to operate as educators.
