Tinubu renames Kaduna Petroleum Institute after Shehu Musa Yar’Adua
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS) in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, honouring the late military officer and pro-democracy advocate for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
The President announced the decision on Friday during his nationwide broadcast marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Tinubu described the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as one of the leading figures whose vision, sacrifice and commitment helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the President, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation of the institution and its conversion into a specialised university focused on geological sciences, engineering and technological innovation.

“General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political evolution and democratic development. His contributions to nation-building and democratic ideals remain significant and worthy of national recognition,” Tinubu said during the address.
The newly renamed university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence for teaching, research and innovation in geological sciences, engineering and related fields, aligning with the government’s efforts to strengthen specialised education and develop critical manpower for Nigeria’s strategic sectors.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters under former Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979, was instrumental in Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1979.

After retiring from the military, he became a prominent political figure and founded the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), a political organisation that played a major role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Yar’Adua later emerged as one of the strongest opponents of military rule under the late General Sani Abacha. He was arrested and imprisoned on allegations of involvement in a coup plot and died in detention in 1997.
The late statesman was also the elder brother of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The renaming of the Kaduna-based institution formed part of activities commemorating Democracy Day, during which President Tinubu paid tribute to several individuals who contributed to Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance and national development.
The move has been widely viewed as a recognition of General Yar’Adua’s enduring legacy and his role in advancing democratic ideals in Nigeria.
