APC to challenge Kano governorship election results in court

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has rejected the election results that declared the candidate of the New Nigerians People’s Party ( NNPP), Abba Kabir Yusuf as Governor-elect.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP as the election winner.

Announcing the result on Monday in Kano, the State Returning Officer, Prof. Doko Ibrahim, Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria said Abba Yusuf polled 1,019,602 votes to emerge as the state’s governor-elect.

He said that Abba Kabiru defeated his closet rival, Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressive Congress ( APC) who scored 892,705 votes.

The Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Abbas announced this while addressing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday.

Abbas, who was represented by the party’s legal adviser, Abdul Adamu Fagge, insisted that the election should be declared inconclusive because the cancelled votes were more significant than the margin between the candidate of APC and NNPP as provided by the Electoral Act.

The party also drew attention to the cancellation of sixteen House of Assembly elections in the state, sighting violence as the reason, while the same votes were considered in collating the governorship election.

“It expressed dismay, saying the two elections took place the same day, same time, same places and under the same circumstances.

Also speaking, Dr Yusuf Gawuna, All Progressive Congress Governorships candidate lauded faithful members for demonstrating maturity during and after the election exercise.

“We will follow the due legal process to reclaim our mandate and call residents to continue to live in peace with one another,” he said.

He said that the party had taken the position to challenge the outcome of elections through a legal process.

Speaking at the briefing, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, said his election was similar to what had transpired in Kano but had been declared inconclusive.

Doguwa hinted that out of the 13 Pooling Units, 12 were cancelled based on violence and over-voting and that today, he had accepted his faith waiting for the rerun of the elections.
