Aviation workers’ strike causes delay in Adamawa governorship election results – INEC

Tension over the delay in announcing the result of the Adamawa governorship election has worsened, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) blaming it on a strike by aviation workers across Nigeria.

Recall that passengers were stranded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as the workers embarked on a two-day warning strike.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) advised travelers and stakeholders to make contingency plans to avoid missing their flights and appointments.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, the national commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr. Festus Okoye, said that the Commission would definitely take a decision on the election, but its commissioners were not in Abuja.

He explained that the Commission had conducted elections simultaneously in Kebbi, Adamawa, Zamfara, Sokoto, Imo, Oyo, and Rivers States, and that most of its national commissioners were still stranded across the country.

“Definitely, we will take a decision on the Adamawa governorship election. Three of our national commissioners monitored the election in Kebbi State and announced the result at 4:00 pm yesterday. Two national commissioners supervised the supplementary election in Sokoto, two in Adamawa, one in Zamfara, one in Imo, one in Oyo, one in Imo, and one in Rivers State,” he said.

However, the strike had stalled their arrival at the Commission Headquarters, as aviation workers were expected to be in Abuja but were unable to fly due to the strike.

“If a good number of national commissioners arrive in Abuja today, we will take a decision tomorrow,” he added.
