Customs boss warns officers against endangering citizens while chasing smugglers
The Acting Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has called for a strategic partnership with the Oyo State government to combat the issue of smuggling. During his visit to the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, the Acting CG emphasized the importance of addressing smuggling as it poses a threat to national security.
“It is crucial for us to seek the support of the state government in our fight against smuggling, particularly in the border areas,” stated the Acting CG. “By working closely together, we can strengthen our partnership and work towards the shared goal of national development and security.”

In response, the Deputy Governor highlighted the need for the Customs officers to exercise discretion in their pursuit of smugglers. He emphasized that more attention should be directed towards criminals involved in the illegal importation of arms and ammunition, as intercepting these criminals can save lives.
To foster a positive relationship between Customs and the community, the Acting CG also paid a visit to the Olubadan of Ibadan, His Royal Majesty, Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun. This visit aimed to seek the support and continued collaboration of the traditional ruler in fulfilling the mandates of the NCS.
Furthermore, the Acting CG visited the Oyo/Osun Area Command, where he addressed the officers and personnel. He reminded them to use their weapons responsibly, strictly for self-defense purposes. The Acting CG emphasized that chasing smugglers into high residential areas or markets should be avoided to maintain a safe and peaceful environment for the public.
The Area Controller, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba, expressed gratitude for the Acting CG’s visit and unwavering support. He commended the Acting CG for his dedication to duty and the positive impact his leadership has had on the entire Customs Community.
During engagements with various stakeholders, the Acting CG reiterated the management’s commitment to working in partnership. He assured stakeholders that the new Customs Management is focused on development, modernization, and engagement, and seeks to include them in the journey.
“We are dedicated to forging a strong partnership with you, as we believe in moving forward together. We value your contributions and want you to be a part of our progress in development and engagement,” concluded the Acting CG.
