FRSC emphasizes road safety amid gubernatorial tribunal judgment in Kano

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano State has issued a cautionary message to supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the wake of the Gubernatorial Election petition Tribunal judgment on Wednesday.

In a statement signed and released to the press by the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Labaran Abdullahi in Kano, Sector Commander Ibrahim Sallau-Abdullahi stressed the importance of responsible behavior during and after the tribunal’s verdict.

“Supporters should resist the urge to engage in exuberant celebrations, particularly involving vehicles or causing any road obstructions. Such wild celebrations can lead to violations of traffic rules, highway blockages, and potential road accidents. Perpetrators will face legal consequences,” he warned.

The FRSC emphasized that officials and other law enforcement agencies will not tolerate reckless driving, traffic violations, driving under the influence, haphazard parking, overloading, speeding, or underage driving in the aftermath of the tribunal’s judgment.

Motorists were advised to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to ensure public safety.

The tribunal is expected to deliver its judgment soon on the petition filed by the APC challenging the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf of the NNPP in the March 18 election.

The announcement of the judgment date followed weeks of legal proceedings, including closing arguments presented by lawyers on August 21.

During the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that the NNPP secured 1,019,602 votes, surpassing the APC and its candidate, Nasir Gawuna, who received 890,705 votes. The NNPP candidate won with a margin of 128,897 votes.

Dissatisfied with the outcome, the APC submitted a petition to the tribunal, contesting the results announced by INEC.

The petition has attracted significant attention, both within and outside the state, due in part to the political rivalry between influential figures whose influence extends to the national stage.

The APC’s petition seeks the nullification of the NNPP Governorship candidate’s victory, citing that the Governor was not a full and registered member of the NNPP before the election.

As an alternative, the APC has requested the tribunal to declare the gubernatorial election inconclusive, arguing that the margin of lead is not greater than the canceled votes.

In response, the respondents have urged the tribunal to dismiss the APC’s petition, deeming it lacking in merit.

The NNPP has firmly stated that all arguments presented by the APC are incompetent, null, void, and fundamentally flawed.

Additionally, the NNPP has contended that the APC’s petition should be invalidated from the outset, as no competent court has jurisdiction to rule on a petition in which the primary contender (the Governorship candidate) was not included.
