The North-East region of Nigeria is in dire need of industrialisation to address its myriad socio-economic challenges and harness its untapped potential. Historically plagued by insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment, the region stands at a critical juncture where strategic industrial investments could transform its economic landscape, improve livelihoods, and foster long-term stability.

One of the most pressing reasons for industrialising the North-East is the urgent need for economic diversification and job creation. The region’s economy is predominantly agrarian, heavily reliant on subsistence farming. While agriculture remains crucial, it cannot solely support the growing population or provide sufficient employment opportunities. Industrialization can introduce new sectors such as manufacturing, agro-processing, and mining, thereby creating a diverse economic base. This diversification is essential for sustainable development and reducing the region’s vulnerability to external shocks.

Job creation is another critical benefit of industrialization. High unemployment rates, particularly among the youth, contribute to poverty and social unrest. Establishing industries can absorb this labor force, offering gainful employment and reducing the appeal of illicit activities, including involvement in insurgency groups. Gainful employment not only improves individual livelihoods but also fosters social stability and economic growth.

Industrialization necessitates the development of robust infrastructure, which is currently lacking in the North-East. The establishment of industries would drive investments in essential infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, and telecommunications. Improved infrastructure not only supports industrial activities but also enhances the quality of life for the region’s residents. The North-East is endowed with abundant natural resources, including arable land, minerals, and renewable energy sources. However, these resources remain largely underutilized due to a lack of industrial capacity. For example, agro-processing industries can add value to agricultural produce, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing farmers’ incomes. Insecurity has long plagued the North East, with insurgency groups exploiting the region’s socio-economic vulnerabilities. Industrialization can play a pivotal role in addressing the root causes of insecurity by providing economic opportunities and improving living conditions. Economic stability through industrial jobs can diminish the allure of extremist groups, fostering a more secure and stable environment.

To achieve the industrialization of the North East, several strategic actions and policy interventions are necessary:
