Court sentences man to life imprisonment for killing 18-year-old boy over girlfriend

Nura Sabiu, 22, has been sentenced to life in prison by a Kano State High Court after stabbing an 18-year-old boy to death.

The accused was said to have conspired with one Dahiru Ubale to attack and stabbed the 18-year-old boy in the back with a knife because he was dating his (Sabiu) girlfriend (Zahra’u).

The court also condemned Dahiru Ubale, 21, to five years in prison.

Sabiu and Ubale were convicted on two counts of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

During trial, Justice Usman Na’abba determined that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“I thus sentence Sabiu to life imprisonment and Ubale to five years imprisonment,” he stated.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Lamido Sorondinki, informed the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 17, 2017, in Jalabi Village, Bunkure Local Government Kano.

According to the authorities, the inmates stabbed the adolescent in the back with a knife because he was dating his girlfriend.

“As a result of the stabbing, the deceased got serious injuries and was transferred to Rano Hospital, where he was declared dead by a medical doctor,” he said.

The prosecutor submitted three witnesses to the court to support its case.

The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges, Mr Umar Danbaito, the defence attorney, introduced three witnesses, including the defendants.

According to the prosecutor, the offence violates Articles 97 and 221 of the Penal Code.
