Electric Biles wins vault for 3rd gymnastics gold of Paris games

Simone Biles soared to her third gold medal of the Paris Games, securing the women’s vault title for her seventh Olympic crown with a gravity-defying Yurchenko double pike.

Biles, who previously led the United States to team gold and claimed the all-around title, outperformed Olympic and world champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil. American Jade Carey took bronze.

Biles’ first vault, the Yurchenko double pike now named the Biles II, earned an impressive 15.700. Her second vault, a Cheng, scored 14.900, resulting in a winning average of 15.300.

“I’m super excited, ecstatic for how my vaults were,” said Biles. “I put in a lot of work to be able to perform that vault well.”

Andrade, who won vault gold in Biles’s absence in Tokyo, scored an average of 14.966. Carey, competing last, secured bronze with a 14.466 average, surpassing North Korea’s An Chang-ok.

Biles now holds 40 world and Olympic medals, 30 of which are gold. She will compete in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Monday.
