How retirees in Nigeria survive on N500 monthly pension – NUP
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has raised concerns over the dire financial plight of some retirees in the country, revealing that certain individuals are receiving as little as N500 as their monthly pension.
Alhassan Musa, the Secretary of NUP in Kaduna State, described the situation as “pathetic” in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Musa, while pensioners in some northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) receive between N3,500 and N18,000 monthly, the condition is far worse in many southern and oil-producing states, despite these regions receiving substantial allocations from the federation account.
Musa highlighted that only retirees in Kaduna State enjoy a minimum pension of N30,000, a policy implemented in 2020 under the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
He advocated for a 50% increase in the minimum pension to improve retirees’ living conditions, suggesting that this should align with the new national minimum wage of N70,000.

The NUP secretary also expressed concern over the challenges faced by retirees under the contributory pension scheme, noting that some have waited over a decade without receiving their benefits.
Musa attributed the delays to the failure of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to remit monthly contributions on time.
He urged the federal government to ensure that no pensioner receives less than the new minimum wage and called on the current Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, to continue the precedent set by his predecessor in supporting pensioners.
