US seizes Russian-flagged oil tanker over alleged Venezuela sanctions breach

US seizes Russian-flagged oil tanker over alleged Venezuela sanctions breach

The United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker allegedly linked to Venezuela, in a move aimed at enforcing sanctions imposed on the South American country’s oil exports.

US authorities said the vessel was intercepted in international waters following a federal court order, after investigations revealed it was part of a network involved in transporting sanctioned Venezuelan crude oil. The operation was carried out by the US Coast Guard with support from other security agencies.

According to officials, the tanker had reportedly changed its name and flag in an attempt to evade detection while moving oil linked to Venezuela’s state-controlled energy sector. The ship was subsequently redirected to a US-controlled port, where it was taken into custody.

Washington described the seizure as part of broader efforts to clamp down on illegal oil shipments and enforce sanctions targeting Venezuela’s government.

Russia has condemned the action, describing it as unlawful and a violation of international maritime rules, while demanding the release of the vessel and its crew. US officials, however, insisted the seizure was legal and carried out in line with American law.
