Insecurity: Matawalle, CDS, other service Chiefs to lead operations in Sokoto

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has instructed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and other military chiefs to relocate to Sokoto, in a renewed effort by the Federal Government to eliminate banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North-West region.

A statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Henshaw Ogubike, highlighted that this strategic move demonstrates the government’s steadfast commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.

During their time in the North-West, the Minister and the Service Chiefs, led by the CDS, will oversee operations to ensure that the notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang are eradicated.

Expressing his concern over the continued activities of terrorists and bandits across Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states, Dr. Matawalle assured the local population that the security forces would leave no stone unturned in their mission to flush out these criminals.

Recent incidents have raised alarm, including a video circulated by bandits showing a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The video, captured after the military had withdrawn to avoid an ambush, showcased bandits celebrating around the stuck vehicle—a situation the Federal Government finds unacceptable.

Dr. Matawalle emphasized the government’s readiness to deploy all necessary resources to secure the region, ensuring that these criminal elements are neutralised and peace is restored. He also called on the Armed Forces to intensify their efforts, reiterating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for the military.

The Minister’s presence in the North-West, alongside top military leaders, is intended to inspire and bolster the resolve of the armed forces. He urged the people of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.
