Tinubu to return from China, UK trips today
President Bola Tinubu is set to return to Abuja on Sunday following his recent official visits to China and the United Kingdom. The announcement was made by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Saturday night.
President Tinubu departed Abuja for Beijing, China, on August 29. His visit, which began on September 2, was marked by a significant diplomatic engagement with Chinese officials. Tinubu met with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, where they discussed various bilateral issues.
“While in China, President Tinubu was warmly received by his host with a 21-gun salute, and a guard of honour was mounted for his inspection,” Onanuga stated.
During the visit, five Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between Nigeria and China. These agreements cover a range of collaborative efforts, including the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative and cooperation on nuclear energy under the Global Development Initiative. The MOUs also include media exchange between China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority.
One of the significant agreements involves the construction of the 68 km Lagos Green rail line, which will connect the Lekki Free Zone to Marina and link with the existing Blue Line. Another notable MOU is for a $1 billion iron ore-to-steel project in Kogi State, signed between Chart and Capstone Integrated Limited of Nigeria and Sinomach-He of China.

Before attending the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, President Tinubu visited major Chinese companies, including Huawei and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). At FOCAC, Tinubu, who is also the chairman of ECOWAS, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation for global peace.
“During his speech at FOCAC, President Tinubu stressed the need for multilateralism and cooperation as essential ingredients for international peace,” Onanuga noted.
Following his time in China, President Tinubu made a brief stop in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria. The UK visit was part of his international engagements aimed at strengthening ties with various global partners.
With his return to Abuja scheduled for Sunday, President Tinubu’s trip marks a significant effort to enhance Nigeria’s international relations and secure valuable agreements for the country’s development.
