Edo 2024: APC’s Okpebholo takes lead with 48,000 vote margin after results from 16 LGAs

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant lead in the Edo State governorship election, ahead of his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). With results declared from 16 local government areas, Okpebholo holds a 48,000-vote advantage.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Okpebholo has secured 244,549 votes, winning 10 of the 16 LGAs, while Ighodalo, with 195,954 votes, claimed victory in six LGAs. Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata trails in a distant third with 13,346 votes.

The collation centre, presided over by the Returning Officer Faruk Adamu Kuta, went on recess around 2:19 pm to await results from the remaining two local government areas. The announcement of the final winner is expected once the collation resumes later in the day.

Despite Okpebholo’s strong lead, the PDP has protested, alleging electoral irregularities. PDP’s candidate, Ighodalo, claimed the election might be the “worst in the country’s history” due to inconsistencies in the process. Meanwhile, the APC urged patience and called for the public to wait for INEC’s official announcement.
