Rumours of President Paul Biya’s death ignite succession battle
Rumours regarding Cameroonian President Paul Biya’s health have sparked political speculation and controversy over succession plans.
After Biya’s prolonged absence following the China-Africa Summit from September 4 to 6, lawyer Christian Ntimbane raised concerns in an open letter to Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, the director of the Civil Cabinet. The lack of official updates about the 91-year-old president’s condition has intensified speculation, with reports indicating he may be recuperating in Switzerland or hospitalized in France.
Christian Ntimbane has called for transparency from the government regarding President Paul Biya’s health, stating, “If he is on vacation, say so. If he is sick, say that too,” in an effort to address public concerns. Biya’s prolonged absence has dominated media coverage and increased anxiety about political stability after his 42-year reign.
Public opinion on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) is divided, with some speculating that France may be attempting to position Biya’s eldest son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as his successor, while others believe Cameroon is nearing liberation from Biya’s long rule.
According to reports, a political framework could already be in place for a transition, potentially designating Biya’s brother-in-law, Robert Nkili, as interim president. However, opposition leaders such as Maurice Kamto are likely to mobilize against any dynastic succession, advocating for democratic reforms.
Biya has been president since November 6, 1982, after serving as prime minister from 1975 to 1982. He is currently the second-longest-serving president in Africa, the longest-serving non-royal leader globally, and the oldest head of state.
As speculation intensifies, the government’s silence continues to exacerbate public uncertainty about Cameroon’s political future.
