At an age when most teenagers are focused on schoolwork or playing video games, Sammy Harvey has already made his mark on the international soccer scene. Last month, the 14-year-old debuted as the starting goalkeeper for the Turks and Caicos Islands in their Concacaf Nations League match against Anguilla. Though his debut ended in a 2-0 loss, Harvey is eager for a rematch, which takes place this Sunday.
Reflecting on the emotional first game, Harvey shared, “I did cry, knowing that my first game was a loss. But I’m ready to go again and prove that I can play at this level.” Guided by his coach and footballing hero, former Jamaican national keeper Aaron Lawrence, Harvey has developed a passion for goalkeeping and hopes to follow in his coach’s footsteps. Despite initially playing as a left and right-back, he quickly adapted to goalkeeping under Lawrence’s guidance, showing talent that promises a bright future.
Harvey isn’t the only young player to debut early for the Turks and Caicos Islands; he follows other 14-year-olds, Christopher Louisy and Watson Jean-Louis. For Coach Lawrence, the Concacaf Nations League is an ideal platform for nurturing young players. He sees potential in Harvey, noting his impressive reflexes and ability to leave the line—qualities that could one day place him in the Premier League.
