Peter Obi slams fuel price hike, urges Tinubu to prioritise Nigerians’ welfare

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, publicly condemned the recent hike in fuel prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), calling the move “insensitive” and “unfortunate.” Obi expressed his concerns on X, saying that the sudden increase would further strain Nigeria’s already struggling economy and harm citizens facing economic hardships due to federal government policies.

Obi criticized the lack of transparency around the hike, noting that NNPCL, although a limited liability company, is regulated by agencies such as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). However, he highlighted confusion surrounding the roles of these regulatory bodies, as all fall under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, headed by the President.

In his post, Obi urged President Tinubu, who also serves as the Petroleum Resources Minister, to take responsibility for explaining the price hike to Nigerians and suggested that it be reversed. He emphasized that the president’s duty is to act in the best interest of citizens, especially during challenging times.

Obi concluded by saying, “To casually inflict such a draconian measure on the populace from the comfort of an annual vacation amounts to taking the people’s welfare lightly and for granted. A new and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed possible!”
