Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has launched a significant initiative to distribute over 10,000 hearing aids to indigent individuals in the Northeast, beginning with a ceremony in Bauchi State, where 2,000 people will receive assistance.

During the event, Obasanjo shared a personal story about his own hearing challenges, which began during a trip abroad. He recounted how he initially insisted he had no hearing issues until a medical examination revealed he was 25% deaf. This experience inspired him to establish the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, which has since provided ear treatments and hearing aids to thousands of Nigerians.

“Many people suffer from deafness unknowingly,” Obasanjo stated, emphasizing the importance of medical check-ups for early detection. He expressed gratitude to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for his contributions to state development and for supporting the foundation’s efforts.

Governor Mohammed thanked Obasanjo for his impactful legacy and for selecting Bauchi as a beneficiary of the foundation’s programs. He also appreciated Obasanjo’s participation in commissioning two road projects aimed at improving transportation within the state.

In a related visit, Obasanjo met with the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, where he highlighted the urgent need for community policing to combat Nigeria’s rising insecurity. “The best form of security is community policing because everyone knows his/her neighbors within the community,” Obasanjo stated, stressing the importance of collective action and unity in addressing security challenges.

The Emir commended Obasanjo for his engagement with the people of Bauchi and echoed the need for peace, unity, and inclusivity as essential for progress. Beneficiaries of the hearing aids expressed their gratitude to the Obasanjo Foundation and the state government for their support, which has significantly improved their quality of life.
