Daily petrol consumption drops 92% under Tinubu – Report
Nigeria has seen a dramatic decline in daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023.
Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) indicates that petrol consumption plummeted to 4.5 million litres per day by August 20, 2024, down from 60 million litres per day in May 2023—an astounding 92% reduction.
The report also notes that only 16 of Nigeria’s 36 states received petrol allocations from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in August, resulting in fuel shortages in the remaining states.

Niger State received the highest petrol allocation, with 21 trucks delivering 940,000 litres per day, while Lagos received 12 trucks, totaling 726,001 litres.
Kaduna also received 12 trucks, supplying 454,001 litres. Other states, including Oyo and Kano, received smaller allocations, further worsening the fuel scarcity situation.
