Ex-lawmaker Farouk Lawan regains freedom after serving jail term in Kuje Prison

Former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan has been released from Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after serving a five-year sentence for bribery.

His release on Tuesday marks the conclusion of a significant legal battle that began with his conviction in 2021.

Lawan, who once chaired the House ad hoc committee investigating the 2012 multi-billion naira petrol subsidy fraud, was found guilty of accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, then-chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited.

The bribe, which came to light during a sting operation orchestrated by Otedola, was linked to Lawan’s efforts to influence the outcomes of the subsidy probe. It was alleged that he agreed to remove Zenon from the list of companies implicated in the fraud, raising serious ethical concerns about his conduct as a public official.

Following his release, Lawan issued a statement expressing his gratitude and optimism for the future. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life,” he said. “I am thankful to Allah for seeing me through this trial. My gratitude extends to my family, friends, and associates who stood by me during this difficult phase.”

Lawan’s case has attracted considerable attention, highlighting issues of corruption and accountability in Nigeria’s political landscape. His return to society raises questions about his next steps and the broader implications of his conviction on public trust in legislative institutions.
