RTEAN initiates pre/post-crash initiative to cut road accidents by 50%
The Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has launched a Pre and Post-Crash initiative aimed at reducing road traffic crashes by 50% by 2030.
This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation and various stakeholders, emphasizes the urgent need for transport workers to adopt safety measures that ensure rapid attention for accident victims.
In a statement signed by RTEAN President Musa Maitakobi and National Secretary Comrade Yusuf Adeniyi, the association highlighted the alarming rate of road traffic crashes (RTCs) in Nigeria, which annually claim thousands of lives and cause severe injuries.
The statement pointed out that many victims are often left unattended at crash sites, significantly diminishing their chances of survival. Additionally, survivors frequently face exorbitant medical costs for their treatment.
To address these pressing issues, the Pre and Post-Crash Initiative will implement several measures, including ensuring all vehicles—both private and commercial—are equipped with lifesaving tools and adhere to the National Road Traffic Regulation (NRTR) 2012 and the Nigerian Highway Code.
RTEAN has mandated that all commercial transport vehicles, both inter and intra-state, register under this initiative, especially during the festive season, which sees a spike in passenger movement and related casualties.

The association is partnering with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) to enforce compliance.
From November 2024, commercial vehicles that do not register will face arrest and fines. RTEAN has urged the public to avoid patronizing unregistered vehicles to safeguard their safety.
Key benefits of the initiative include access to a standardized First Aid Kit, as required by the NRTR and Nigerian Highway Code, to aid first responders in providing immediate care to RTC victims before emergency services arrive.
The initiative also offers a death benefit or permanent disability coverage of 1.5 million Naira for each occupant of registered vehicles and covers medical and emergency treatment expenses up to 1 million Naira.
