EndBadGovernance: Minor suspects’ fainting in court deliberate, scripted — Police
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has stated that the fainting of several minor suspects at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday during their arraignment for alleged involvement in the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest was “deliberate and scripted.”
This statement, issued by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyowa Adejobi, was in response to widespread media coverage of the incident, where six of the 75 minors reportedly collapsed in the courtroom before Justice Obiora Egwuatu.
The minors, aged between 12 and 15, face ten serious charges, including terrorism, conspiracy, and treason, with accusations of attempting to destabilise Nigeria. These charges stem from their alleged participation in the August 3rd nationwide protests.
ACP Adejobi’s statement defended the police’s handling of the case, highlighting that officers “rigorously adhered to legal provisions” and provided for the suspects’ “basic rights and privileges,” including necessary medical attention. He stated that the court fainting was a “deliberate attempt” to draw negative media attention. Medical aid was reportedly given to those who fainted.

Justice Egwuatu subsequently granted bail to 67 of the minors at N10 million each, requiring one surety who must be a civil servant, given that they are under 15. The case, which includes allegations such as mutiny and arson, has drawn significant public interest, with debates on the accountability of minors under Nigerian law. The police cited global practices to affirm that, even for young individuals, serious offences can carry legal consequences.
The police urged the public to view the case with objectivity, promising professionalism and respect for human rights as the legal process continues.
