Trump appoints Elon Musk to head new department of gov’t efficiency

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed tech magnate Elon Musk as the head of a newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with plans to transform the U.S federal system.

Musk, renowned for leading innovative companies like Tesla and SpaceX, will work alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to streamline government operations and address the staggering $6.5 trillion in annual federal expenditures.

The announcement, made on Tuesday by the Trump transition team, unveils an ambitious plan focused on eliminating wasteful spending, reducing cumbersome regulations, and infusing a start-upentrepreneurial approach into the federal agencies.

The initiative is being compared to the “Manhattan Project” of the 21st century, aimed at restructuring the U.S. government in a way that eliminates inefficiency and boosts accountability.

In his statement, Trump expressed strong confidence in Musk’s ability to lead the charge. “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working alongside American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump said. “Together, they will dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies. This is essential to the ‘Save America’ movement.”

Musk, known for his disruptive innovations, echoed the President-elect’s sentiment, promising to “send shockwaves through the system.”

In a statement, Musk noted, “This will become potentially the Manhattan Project of our time, driving large-scale reforms that will transform the way the government operates and make it more responsive to the American people.”

The reform efforts will focus on overhauling redundant federal regulations and combating fraud and waste within the system.

The two leaders also plan to work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement these changes.

Their goal is to conclude the project by July 4, 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“Their work will make government more efficient, with a smaller, more accountable structure that will ultimately benefit all Americans,” Trump said.

Ramaswamy, a strong advocate for free-market principles, is expected to play a central role in pushing for reforms that foster a more agile and cost-effective federal government.

“We will liberate our economy and make the U.S. government accountable to ‘We the People,” Trump added.
