WAEC bans 13 schools, blacklists 14 supervisors over malpractices
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has banned 13 schools in Kogi State from participating in the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination due to involvement in malpractices during the 2023/2024 WASSCE.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mr. Wemi Jones, made the announcement during a meeting with principals and supervisors implicated by WAEC for examination misconduct.
The commissioner also revealed that 14 supervisors had been blacklisted for their roles in the 2023/2024 WASSCE malpractices.
According to Mr. Jones, the government has pledged to take action against school principals, teachers, and supervisors involved in or aiding examination malpractices in the state.
He stressed that examination malpractices are criminal offenses and will be treated as such under the law.
Jones further stated that, moving forward, those found guilty of exam malpractice would be prosecuted in accordance with the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020.
Mr. Jones announced that a committee, led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, would be established to investigate individuals implicated by WAEC.
“Kogi State has invested heavily in education and will no longer tolerate the actions of a few ‘bad eggs’ who undermine the progress made in the sector,” Jones stated.
In addition, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Seidu Jibrin, urged principals and supervisors to refrain from engaging in examination malpractices.
“I urge you to reflect on your actions, as posterity will judge everyone by their deeds,” Jibrin said. “While some teachers are being recognized for their achievements, it would be wrong for you to be remembered for misconduct.”
He further expressed regret that such incidents were occurring at a time when Kogi State is making significant investments in education, warning that anyone found guilty would face severe sanctions.
