Alleged ₦110bn Fraud: Yahaya Bello arrives FCT court

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has been arraigned at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

After reportedly being in hiding since April 2024, Bello was brought to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday at approximately 12:55 p.m.

According to newsmen, Yahaya Bello was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after repeatedly failing to respond to invitations, leading to his trial in absentia. EFCC operatives clarified in an interview that Bello was apprehended by their tactical team, contrary to some reports claiming he drove himself to the EFCC.

One detective stated, “Do you think Bello was ready to face court? Our operatives arrested him after gathering solid intelligence. If he had voluntarily surrendered, he would have come with the current governor, Mr. Usman Ododo. The claim that he drove himself to us is false.”

Bello has been implicated in a major money laundering case, with the EFCC declaring him wanted on April 18, 2024, in connection with an N80.2 billion fraud charge.

Fresh charges have been filed against him before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja.

The case, which was heard on November 14, was adjourned to today (November 27), when the EFCC sought an adjournment in the new case against the former governor. The EFCC also noted that the 30-day window for Bello, set by the court following earlier summons, is still in effect.
