State NLC to begin strike over minimum wage implementation

The Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a one-week warning strike starting Monday, December 2, 2024, to protest the state government’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage.

State NLC Chairman, Prof. Ogugua Egwu disclosed this during a press briefing in Abakaliki. He confirmed that all affiliated unions would join the strike to express dissatisfaction with the government’s disregard for workers’ welfare.

Egwu explained that the decision aligns with a directive issued by the national NLC body on November 8, 2024, instructing state councils in non-compliant states to take necessary actions based on collective bargaining agreements and to push for the implementation of the new minimum wage.

In his statement, Egwu said: “On behalf of the entire State Council, we hereby notify the public of a one-week warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ebonyi State. This action underscores our resolve to ensure the rights of workers are upheld and the minimum wage is implemented without further delay.”

The strike will involve all unions under the NLC umbrella, signalling a unified stance against what the NLC perceives as the government’s nonchalant attitude towards the plight of workers.
