South African President under fire over Nigeria visa deal

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has come under intense scrutiny following his decision to ease visa requirements for Nigerian businessmen and tourists. The policy, announced during the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, has sparked outrage among sections of the South African populace, with critics accusing the President of compromising national security and sovereignty.

The controversial deal allows Nigerian applicants to initiate visa processes using copies of their passports, submitting original documents at a later stage. While aimed at facilitating trade and tourism, this provision has been met with fierce resistance.

Outraged citizens have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction, alleging that Nigerians are “flooding” South Africa with harmful intentions. Some detractors have called for Ramaphosa’s resignation, while others are demanding a nationwide shutdown to oppose the policy.

Fikile Mbalula, the National Secretary of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), has dismissed the criticisms, describing them as misinterpretations aimed at undermining the President.

Mbalula clarified that the deal does not grant Nigerians entry into South Africa without passports but rather simplifies the process for specific categories of travellers.

“We dismiss the so-called national shutdown as nothing more than a failed attempt to sow chaos,” Mbalula said during a press conference in Johannesburg. “The relaxation of visa requirements does not equate to entry without passports. There has been a clear distortion of the President’s words.”

President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of fostering trade relations between the two nations.

“Our efforts to create a favourable environment include our simplified visa process for Nigerian businesspeople to travel to South Africa. Qualifying Nigerian businesspeople can be granted a five-year multiple-entry visa,” Ramaphosa said during the BNC session.

He further highlighted South Africa’s openness to Nigerian investments and the need to address challenges faced by businesses operating in both countries.

Despite the uproar, the ANC remains steadfast in supporting the policy, urging the public to focus on the economic benefits of improved bilateral relations.

“South Africa remains committed to maintaining law and order while fostering improved trade relations with Nigeria. Ramaphosa is a democratically elected leader, and attacks on him equate to an attack on the nation’s sovereignty.”

While tensions continue to simmer, analysts suggest that the controversy underscores the delicate balance between national security and economic diplomacy in South Africa’s policymaking.
