Uganda orders nationwide internet shutdown ahead of general election

The Ugandan government has ordered a nationwide internet shutdown ahead of the country’s general election, a move that has sparked criticism from opposition groups and civil society organisations.

Telecommunications providers in Uganda confirmed that access to the internet and social media platforms was restricted following directives from authorities, just days before voters head to the polls.

Government officials said the decision was taken in the interest of national security and public order, arguing that online platforms could be used to spread misinformation or incite violence during the election period.
