Medecins Sans Frontieres, otherwise called Doctors Without Borders, has targeted 10,000 children, pregnant and lactating women for malnutrition screening at the internally displaced persons’ camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The screening followed the latest increase in the number of displaced persons due to the rise in insurgency attacks in Borno.
According to the Health Promotion Supervisor, MSF, Yakubu Yahaya, the organisation decided to target informal camps because of neglect.
He said the formal camps seemed to be given priority attention over informal camps by humanitarian actors and government officials.
Yahaya noted that the screening, which started on Monday, would be on for 10 working days, with a camp visited daily.
He added that the camps to be covered included Umara Bolori, Doro, Doron Baga, Shuwari 5, Afirdaus, Maishidimami, Sulumbri, Musuni, VIO, Dalwa I, II and III.
Others were Bulama Ahmadu Bello, Umarari, Bulabin and Baba Adamu Bello.
He said, “Among the 1000 people targeted to be screened are children between six months and 10 years old, pregnant and lactating women from the selected camps and their host communities.”
The Nurse Team Supervisor, MSF, Augusta Obodoefuna, said the group already had health centres in 10 informal IDP camps in Maiduguri to take care of the health needs of the camps and their host communities.
