3 dead as Nasarawa records 43 fire incidents

The Chief Fire Officer in the state, Mr Dalhatu Dogara, revealed that no fewer than three persons have lost their lives to fire incidents in Nasarawa State with about Forty-three incidents recorded in 2020.

He made this statement in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital yesterday.

He said 70 per cent of the fire incidents were as a result of carelessness on the part of residents, adding that most of the incidents were due to electrical faults and negligence.

He urged residents not to leave electrical appliances plugged whenever they were away from home.

While expressing worry over the increase in infernos in the state, Dogara added, “Forty-three incidents have been recorded with three cases in Nasarawa Eggon, two deaths in Doma Local Government Area, one death in the Lafia Local Government Area of the state and others.

“The matter has become a source of concern to the state government. The illicit activities of gas peddlers have also escalated the problem. Many gas sellers in the state are illegal, while many gas stations have not met the requirements as stipulated by the Department of Petroleum Resources.”

He, however, urged the state government to ensure all local government areas were equipped with firefighting facilities while appealing to residents to ensure they had fire extinguishers in their homes.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary, Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, Zakari Alumaga, called on the residents to provide enough ventilation in their various houses when cooking with gas.

He warned that gas cylinders should be kept outside the house, calling on all stakeholders to join hands in checking the activities of illegal gas stations.
