Trigger-happy policeman shoots ex-LG chairman at checkpoint
The Zone 12 Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the detention of a police officer accused of shooting a former Chairman of Ningi Local Government Council, Alhaji Danlami Alhassan, in Bauchi.
SP Thomas Goni, the Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 12, assured the public on Monday that a thorough and impartial investigation would be conducted into the incident.
“The officer involved has been identified and will face disciplinary action in line with the Force guidelines. We understand that this incident has generated a lot of tension and concern within the community. We want to assure the public that we are taking this matter very seriously,” Goni stated.
He also added that the police are reviewing training protocols to ensure officers are better equipped to handle situations professionally.
Recounting the ordeal, Alhassan said the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Wunti Market area in Bauchi.
“I was on my way to buy suya (roasted meat) when the incident occurred,” Alhassan told journalists.
He explained that he refused to stop his vehicle when the officer, whose identity was unknown at the time, tried to flag him down.
“I didn’t know who he was or why he wanted me to stop. When I got to where people were, I stopped, and he crossed my car. As I opened the door to come out, before I knew what was happening, he shot from the other direction, and I felt something hit me on the head while blood gushed out,” Alhassan said.

The police have assured the public of transparency in their investigation and promised to take appropriate disciplinary actions against the officer involved.
