Police free man allegedly chained by father for 17 years in Bauchi
The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued a man who was allegedly chained for 17 years by his biological father in Shadawanka Village, Bauchi Local Government Area.
The victim, identified as Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, was reportedly confined and restrained to a wooden log inside his father’s house for nearly two decades.
Police said the shocking discovery followed an intelligence tip-off from a concerned resident on Monday.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Habib Nafiu, officers received the report at about 4:20 p.m. on February 16, 2026.

“Acting on credible information from a good Samaritan, detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, in collaboration with the Police Public Relations Officer, visited the village and successfully rescued the victim, who was found in a severely emaciated condition,” the statement read.
The father, Mohammed Lawan, has since been arrested and is currently in police custody.
The victim has been taken to a medical facility for urgent treatment and rehabilitation on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu.

The police commissioner has ordered a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged confinement. The case will subsequently be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough probe.
Authorities say further details will emerge as investigations continue into what they described as a disturbing and inhumane act.
